Now the books that are delivered to the home, around here at least, contains just the business and maybe government listings. The internet just followed along; you can find the basic information for free if you dig around but the pay-per-view sites are going to push their way to the front of the search engines. Things went fine for a while until the Yellow Pages business started to decline. Verizon, a very profitable company, spun off that business into Idearc, a money loser. They renamed it SuperMedia and eventually got taken over by Dex Media.
A clause in the contract allowed Verizon to spin off their retirees when they spun off that division making them no longer responsible for the benefits. Because SuperMedia was bankrupt or close to it, they cut off the "guaranteed" insurance benefits to their retirees.
