Arrive Alive. Criteria Any organization, business, individual, family, city, county, state, or federal agency is welcome to apply for participation in the Georgia Adopt-A-Highway program. Read More Each volunteer group must have at least six members, with three backup members. Children aged twelve to fifteen years must be supervised by adults at a rate of one adult for every three children. Children under the age of twelve are ineligible for participation in the program.
Due to the normal conditions in the right of way, all volunteers are required to wear plain colored pants and shirts and a Department approved safety vest purchased from Georgia DOT. Bare legs and open shoes are not allowed. Baseball caps are acceptable for sun protection.
However, no words, slogans or designs are allowed on any clothing or headwear. Every individual participant in litter pickup must fully complete the required waiver in the application. Additional volunteers, who did not sign the original waiver form in the approved application, must submit a completed waiver form to the District Adopt -A-Highway coordinator no less than the second business day before beginning any litter pick-up. All release forms must be on file in GDOT offices before volunteers are given permission to do litter pickups on state-controlled roadways.
Recognition The Department will provide a sign acknowledging the segment of road has been adopted.

Areas that Cannot be Adopted The following areas are not available for adoption: Areas that are already adopted you can be put on a waiting list for these areas on a first-come, first-served basis. Controlled access roads. Areas where the speed limit is more than 55 mph. Areas where access is unsafe. Areas that are safe only with traffic control. Areas where the shoulder of the road is too narrow or steep. Areas where visibility is too restricted. Areas where construction is under way or planned. Areas that have heavy traffic or the traffic is too close to the work area.
Areas where the terrain is too rugged or where the vegetation is too dense. Program Info Each volunteer group adopts at least a one-mile stretch of highway and agrees to remove litter from both sides of the road at least four times a year for a two-year period. Contact the District Coordinator for your part of the state. The District Coordinator can tell you whether a particular site is available for adoption or can, if you prefer, recommend a suitable site for you. The District Coordinator will notify you when you are approved and will assist you in getting started. You cannot transfer your permit to others. You or Georgia DOT may cancel anytime you are unable to meet the permit requirements. Permits may be temporarily suspended by Georgia DOT for safety reasons.

No records survive regarding the number of slaves Twiggs owned over his lifetime, though he left seven slaves to his wife when he died. The Twiggs land later became Augusta's Bush Field airport. The only extant remnant of the estate is the family cemetery, now identified by a historical marker.
In Twiggs continued his public service with an appointment as a state Indian commissioner and concluded land cession treaties with the Creeks. In he served on the committee that welcomed U. Twiggs was also a member of the commission that selected the site for a state university which became the University of Georgia , and was a trustee of Richmond Academy and later of the new university.

He was promoted to major general of militia in , conducted an expedition against the Creeks in , and led the troops that compelled the abandonment of Elijah Clarke's Trans-Oconee Republic rebellion in He was involved in mobilization of the militia for war with Britain in and and for suppression of a suspected slave revolt in Twiggs and six partners formed a company in to invest in Yazoo land, but they were unsuccessful in their bid.
After the Yazoo land scandal broke, Twiggs sat on the Richmond County grand jury that reported "the citizens generally execrate the [Yazoo] business. Twiggs died on March 29, , and was buried in the family cemetery, where his grave marker still stands. Hide Caption.
