I had to go find other things to do, since he got me hooked, hooked onto the blues. I drank out of the bottle, passed it back to Dee, and Dee drank out of the bottle. This is better than the Squeeze Club! And [later when we] came back to the Apollo, then I was directing this piece band.

But I could carry that band. So, the guys would shuffle their papers around, looking at the little lights over the music. You know, this sounds pretty good! And M-Pac! And they recorded me. But it was okay. They also had Harold Burrage—who I love, because he was a great singer—the same background singers sang on my record, too. I thought about it, and in the old days, I always wanted to play with a top gospel group, because I came from the gospel, you know?

And at the time, I played with whoever made me feel good. If I like this group, [if they] sound good, and they invite me to play, I go play. And I played with the Soul Stirrers for onward of two, maybe three years. Then I decided I wanted to go back with my brother, and I went back with my brother.

We were always comfortable together.

One day, he was playing a show in Chicago, and I eased up and took the bass from the bass player that was playing in the band, and I put it on and I started to play. And Freddie, [turns around] he looked back, and he started laughing. Soon after these sessions, King moved with his family to Dallas, Texas. And we understood that, you know.

It was called Operation Soul. So he came out and did a few gigs with us, and we locked just like that. Eventually I pulled him away from Curtis Mayfield and put him in Operation Soul, and we became a good group. And then Freddie brought in [pianist] David Maxwell. This brought King to a new audience, and with that a new level of success. Turner traveled the world with his brother. We played poker, we—oh, man, partied. And at the jail, that was the last time we were able to do that, because we never took our time to do that between the shows, because we were playing poker.

That was the pastime. We never picked up a guitar in between. There was an acoustic guitar laying on the table. Freddie picked it up. Why would he sing Sweet Home Chicago? Later in King became ill.

We were out west somewhere, playing a gig, and we sat down. He was feeling something. He was only 42 years old. And he told me a few things, and he wanted me to take the van into Tulsa; that was the next gig. We were always together. I practically just gave up. You gotta get up and get out. You gotta go. Joe had a way of nagging you, but in a good way—not to piss you off. I credit Mighty Joe. Weary of touring, Turner relocated to New Orleans, where he would eventually meet singer Marva Wright. She wanted blues. And Eugene Carrier, who played with B.

King for many, many years, knew her before I knew her. We played together about 25 years. We covered a lot of ground. She was like the closest thing to my brother as you could get. They both had the same sense of humor, they both liked to gamble—many nights we played poker. Deacon Jones, I got him in the band with us, and the game went on just as [if] Freddie King was alive. Aside from that, she was one hell of a blues singer—and gospel singer. And a great friend; we got along really, really well.

I had the greatest respect for her, and she respected me for who I am. Wright, Dr. John, Charles Brown and Davell Crawford are featured on it as well. I wrote all of the tunes, and the guys that came in that played on it—they still love that record. She passed away the following year, and Turner was once again on his own.

Though comfortable all his life in the role of sideman, he finally decided to embrace the spotlight and take center stage. Recently Turner has held a weekly gig at B. I told them I will be coming back doing shows with them periodically.

This particular gig proved bittersweet: Turner played the festival with King and Deacon Jones. Sibley, at Salem, June 24, Mary, and Aaron Gilfords, int.
