Which documents can be legalised?
This process began due to a change in Puerto Rico's birth certificate law and enabled a higher level of security in the issuance process of birth certificates. US Citizenship and Immigration Services has issued a memo stating that as of September 30 , all certified copies of birth certificates issued before July 1 are invalid.
However, this new regulation should not affect the citizenship status of people born in Puerto Rico; it affects only whether a certified copy of a birth certificate is considered to be valid. All forms of certified copies of Puerto Rico-issued birth certificates were acceptable on the I-9 form up to September However, since then, only Puerto Rican birth certificates issued on or after July 1 are acceptable as proof of identity on the I-9 form.
